There were never any perceived problems on fence posts when we had CCA preservatives. Why can we not have CCA treated fence posts?
Even during the days of CCA (chromated copper arsenate) wood preservatives there were some failures reported. It is not only the performance credentials of the wood preservative that produces high performance treated timber, but also other factors such as which species of timber are used, how well the timber is prepared ready for treatment and how professionally the treatment is carried out.
CCA wood preservatives were safely used for many years to provide an effective protection for timber. However, in the early 2000's new legislation from the EU severely restricted the use of CCA products to the treatment of timbers used in 'industrial applications'.
This restriction means that fencing timbers can no longer be treated with CCA preservative. In Tanalith E it is believed to be the most effective 'new generation' wood preservative, particularly for ground contact timbers.
