YORKSHIRE BOARDING Rough-Sawn 100mm x 22mm Boards, Rails & Pales (in several lengths)
Rough-sawn Yorkshire boarding is a traditional vertical timber cladding system, made from green or brown pressure-treated (tanalised) softwood. Commonly used on agricultural buildings, it is designed to provide excellent ventilation while offering effective protection from the weather.
The system features spaced boards—100mm wide x 22mm thick, with regular-sized gaps between each board—creating a practical and durable cladding solution. This design allows air to circulate freely, while the board arrangement helps deflect rain, keeping interiors relatively dry. As a result, it is widely used for barns, livestock housing, garden screening, and outbuildings.
Yorkshire boarding creates a relatively dark interior, compared to other screens, which can be beneficial in certain agricultural settings, such as dairy farming, where light management improves milk production and animal calmness.
While primarily an agricultural solution, Yorkshire boarding is increasingly used in landscaping and residential settings for garden fencing, privacy screens, and exterior cladding on outbuildings to achieve a rustic aesthetic.
KEY BENEFITS
- Enhanced Ventilation: Open spacing promotes strong airflow, ideal for agricultural environments.
- Weather Resistance: Board spacing and overlap help reduce rain penetration.
- Durability: Pressure-treated (tanalised) timber resists rot, decay, and insect attack, ensuring a long service life.
- Traditional Appearance: Provides a rustic, natural finish suited to both rural and domestic settings.
TYPICAL USES
These 100mm x 22mm (approximately 4" x 1") tanalised (pressure-treated) boards are highly versatile and widely used across outdoor and construction projects (both domestic & commercial), including:
- Fencing: Hit-and-miss fencing (horizontal or vertical), fence pales/slats, and gravel boards to protect fence panels from ground moisture.
- Landscaping: Garden edging, raised beds, and plant supports or ladders.
- Cladding & Construction: Agricultural cladding, pergola components, and general structural or temporary work.
- Concrete Work: Forms & shuttering (where a smooth concrete surface isn't required)
- Outdoor Projects: Simple garden furniture, such as benches, planters, and rustic features.
Often referred to as "sawn treated" timber or "4x1" timber, these tanalised (pressure-treated) boards are valued for their strength, durability, and suitability for both functional and decorative outdoor uses. |
